Dragon Half (Anime OVA) Review.

I have been in need of joy. I have had a need of a surplus of it since things have been well, how they've been. And beyond that, a desire for time and rest. But sometimes you can find a moment with someone you love and enjoy something utterly ridiculous.

 

Dragon Half is about a half dragon, half human girl called Mink (not a dragon species), in love with her idol, a singer called Dick Saucer (yes, his name) while dealing with a King (? Of somewhere?) and his daughter, whose half slime (her Mom thought he looked like one too) who is an asshole but also sympathetic and and and

 

And that's kinda of the vibe this show has. It's an unending train of gags and the nature of it remains with a core kernel of ridiculous. Watched with an incredibly competently silly dub with a joyful exuberance to the voice acting, it feels farcically silly in the way you kinda need, combined with a unique blend of art styles between the chibi like silly and the more detailed classic OVA art style that is gorgeous to see in older anime pieces.

 

The action isn't bad and the humour at points, while hitting kinda aged poorly points, is rarer than other comedy anime I've seen. The colour palette is gorgeous and it's short, which is sometimes a benefit to a story, though it does feel like it goes unfinished too; it feels there's more story to tell that wasn't adapted thoroughly. But that being said; the enjoyment, the silliness and the bright nature of this show is warm enough that it kinda overrides that.

 

It's just what I needed with someone I cared about. I hope it makes you giggle too.

Fafner: Dead Aggressor (Anime Series) Review

  There are experiences that are always a little marred by stumbling blocks; they go for shock value and do so at times where it's trying to set a tone then they stumble with it, they stir up anger and drama but do so in a way that's baffling and confusing rather than investing, it chooses beats that don't match the tempo the story has been trying to keep up. But, there are experiences that manage to do that and somehow pull out enough good and joy that you almost forget about it or even find a way to appreciate it beyond the fault. Fafner: Dead Agressor is one of those experiences.   Fafner fell through to me through being exposed to it through an old handheld game, Super Robot Wars K and hearing of its famed brutality, the idea no one was safe. Downwell (Game) Review.

  There are games that we love, games we abhor, games that we are fond of and games that do something else; they tap into a feeling, a moment, an itch or a desire that we might not know we had. It's hard to quanitify that desire or to know what it is because they appeal to our minds in ways that hit a very specific set of requirements that only really make ourselves aware of them as we experience life a little more. So for the last four years of my life, has a game been one that anchored itself to my need to work against something very dificult and encourage me to improve at it.
