Ranking of Kings (Anime TV Series) Review.

Image
I am sat with my family and friends and we are raising an eyebrow. A person on screen uses sign language imperfectly and not too far before this, I was crying and now am left sort of bereft and confused, actively making fun of a moment in a show that I have enjoyed. And do a bit longer after this but then return to that same earnest emotion. I'm confused, because what I've watched has provoked a severe series of emotions within me over a period of my life that has gone on longer then this.   Ranking of Kings, is about what makes a ruler. Body? Soul? Heart? Who is worthy of leading others and being looked to? And it does so by introducing the son of a giant King, Boji, who is deaf and is mostly non-verbal though can be understood by those who know him. He is gentle, bright hearted and earnest but is commonly made fun of and looked down on by so many. And when he meets a being made of shadow, an oppressed final member of a genocided clan, Kage, they reach out and lea...

Usho & Tora (1992 Anime OVA) Review.

I like things that have a rhythm to them. Stories don't have to always reinvent or subvert a genre to do so. And Ushio & Tora is for all intents and purposes, a monster of the week adventure show that does exactly what its name says; tell the story of the boy chosen by a magic spear that can slay monsters, the Beast Spear and said beast, Tora, who was freed by him grabbing the spear out of him.   It's a story that as it goes, is based around a number of monster beings of various folklore in Japanese mythology being confronted by Ushio and the slow, very slow affection that develops between the two as they undergo this journey together. It's not a overly complicated dynamic and yet it's charming to watch. It's an older anime, so the art style is uite gorgeous to look at in turn and the action and music are quite a vibe to them, capturing an era of the early nineties quite well.   I don't really have much to say beyond this; not that it's b...

Signalis (Game) Review

Image
CW: Mentions of depression, queerphobia, burnout   This review was written after a second playthrough and achieving all achievements within game as well as things only seen on a second playthrough.   I'm tired.   It's hard to explain without kind of going into deep rooted fears but it does relate, I promise. I'm really tired. I'm weary and a lot of days, even surrounded by the best people in the world, it doesn't quite ease. It's scary honestly, how weary you can feel in a world that does not abate to give you reasons to feel empty at points. Or rather, the people and society you live in, treating you as less in service to a cause you don't feel connected to or much care for or about. It is common in the modern day, to feel, especially as someone who is queer and femme, downtrodden by a society desperate to use you as a tool or cast you aside and label you an abomination.   So, Signalis is to me in this moment, what World of Horr...
